With their walls surrounded by the turquoise color of the Caribbean Sea, the ruins of the old Mayan city of Tulum seem to reign from the cliffs of this part of the eastern coast.
Smaller than other Mayan locations like Chichén Itzá, this archaeological site counts with the incomparable beauty of the marine surroundings.
It is located 64km to the south of Playa del Carmen and it is better to visit it early in the morning or at dusk, because at noon there are too many tourists. It is also convenient to contract the services of the guides at the entrance, they are always ready to reveal some of the secrets of this city built in the middle of the IV century and that knew its greater splendor between the XIII and XIV centuries.
The route follows the three walls that surround the place until you arrive to the main building, known as The Castle. The rocky walls end in white sand beaches and crystalline waters: it is not hard to guess the reason why the first inhabitants wanted to live in this land.
It is easy to understand why Tulum is considered to be one of the archaeological sites with greatest touristic affluence: the mixture of Mayan treasures and crystal-clear waters attracts travelers from all over the world.
Two km away from the ruins, the town of Tulum offers a wide variety of bars, restaurants and hotels for those who decide to stay longer.
Back in the hotel, each one of the travelers thinks of the visited places. Suddenly, silence is interrupted: “ Which is the best one? ”, somebody asks. That’s when the memory travels back to Playa del Carmen, the manglares, the jungle, the mayan ruins and the dolphins, the coral reefs, the hidden secret of the natural wells and the old legend written on the rocks. Is it possible to choose only one? The question is left without an answer and will become another one of the mysteries of the Mayan Riviera.
